Fat Man’s Squeeze, Rock City Gardens, Rock City, TN

We spent the night up on Lookout Mountain near Rock City Gardens, we started our day at the Starbucks across the street.  Rock City was great, we liked the “fat man’s squeeze,” the bridges and spectacular views. I also really enjoyed the Mother Goose fairytale cave-originally we thought that would be more for small children, but were impressed with all the attention to detail- and seeing all the rooms carved into the lengthy cave was just a really neat experience, being in the dark save for the illumination of the blacklights.  I fear our pictures will not do it justice.  It is well worth the trip.

At Rock City Gardens, in addition to Fat Man’s Squeeze, you’ll also find the Grand Corridor, Needle’s Eye, Deer Park, Mushroom Rock, Goblin’s Underpass, Shelter Rock, the Swing-Along Bridge (Chris is standing on the Swing Along Bridge in the picture below), Sky Bridge, See seven States from Lover’s Leap, Flag Court, Climbing Wall, Group Pavilion, Tortoise Shell Rock, Observation Point, 1,000 Ton Balanced Rock, Fairyland Caverns, Critter Classroom, and Mother Goose Village.

The development of Rock City Gardens was begun in the 1920′s by the couple who owned the private estate-Garnet and Frieda Carter. Garnet was also the inventor of Tom Thumb Miniature Golf. Today, the Garden is maintained by local master craftmen, and is home to more than 400 indigenous varieties of plant life.

If you see a Barn painted beside the highways leading to Chattanooga, you’ll have Garnet to thank, as this was part of his creative advertising campaign to draw visitor’s during the Depression. These barns are now a part of the local heritage, so enjoy! :)
